Question
Eviction Emergency (New Jersey) Please Help?
My mom hasn't paid 3 months rent because this summer (june) my dad pasted away, he was the one that paid the bills and stuff. I live in New Jersey. We are close to being evicted because we can't pay rent & we have no where to go, is there any place that can help us with rent. Im still in school & my mom can not work because of her shoulder. Please Please Help I really like the house I'm in & I don't want to move.

Okay, first off: Have you talked to your landlord about the situation? It may sound like a dumb question, but you would be surprised how many tenants don't explain their situation and the landlord would have been willing to help. So, assuming that your landlord is a greedy money-grubber, there are a couple of options to choose from. You need to have your mother go directly to the local welfare office. They will be able to set you up with some food stamps (I know that doesn't help your immediate housing situation, but it could help your mom and not have to pay for groceries out of pocket). Now, while you're there, your mother should sign up for as many programs as she is eligible for - the more money, the better. Next, your mom should make a trek over to the local HUD (Housing and Urban Development) office. There, she can apply for Section 8. Assuming you haven't heard of it, it is a government program that offers vouchers for housing. Now, I haven't ever needed to use them, so I don't know the exact specifics of how it works. But, here is their website to help you find an office (You must go personally to apply, however I've read that families get priority). They might be able to get you the vouchers to keep you in the house. www.hud.gov Good luck!
