Question

I am very badly in need of help! Please?

I am now in a very bad stage of my life. Any help will be most appreciated. I am 20-years-old. My family and I are (legal) immigrants. I am about to start work within the next two weeks. I want to move out and work, live and pay for my college, on my own. (I just withdrew from a Tier 1 university where I was a physics major; I have goals in life; I am not one of those bad immigrants) Here's the problem: I don't have a credit card/credit history. And the apartment office told me something about requiring the credit application. How can I do this? 1) How fast can I get a credit card after I get work? The rent is only $389, which I can manage. 2) But how do I get the credit history? Please assume I can get little help from my parents. I am on my own. Please help me out. I am not completely familiar with the housing business.

There is no quick way to establish a credit history. But what you can do is demonstrate some financial integrity by offering to pay the first two months rent up front plus the security deposit. This will give the landlord more of a cushion should something go wrong. Be upfront and honest and let him know your situation. If he is unwilling to work with you someone else will. Money talks. And the next time you will have already established a rental history so you will not have the same problem. In the meantime, begin to apply for a credit card or two, or get a car financed to start building a good credit history.

First you need to understand Credit is earned, not given. I'm sure there's a Walmart around you (they are every where), go and get a prepaid credit card. Use it for a few months and your'e on your way to obtaining a credit (FICA) score. A good site for learning credit is www.creditinfocenter,com
