Question

Local housing allowance lower when your under 25?

I am 21 and relocating to Liverpool and was originally going to houseshare at first but I have come across a lovely flat which would be ideal. I checked out the LHA rates as I will be out of work at first, and for 1 bedroom it said £395 a month which would cover the £350 a month rent I'd be paying. However, I then clicked onto another page and read that as I am under 25 I'd only be entitled to a shared room rate which is £238 a month. Is this correct and if so, why is it lower?

Yes thats correct - Government decided (some while ago) to introduce a rate for under 25's that would meet their housing needs. This was called the single room rate, as they decided in their wisdom that if you are under 25 you dont need a house or flat but could just occupy a room in a shared house and set the allowance accordingly. Around here not so long back the single room rate was £38 pw when flats were going for £400 pm! You have to somehow find the difference....
