how this website works?

i almost familiar with the way that ebay or expedia makes money, but could you please help me to find out how adertising websites which send you back to the main company or organization webpage makes money? such as this website: www ... do they have some contracts with universities or colleges if users/students register through their website they will get commission or some portion of the money? could you plese help me to know how it woks?
