A 599 sounds like a disaster or a brand new score. If you don't have a line of credit (credit card) then save up some money and open up a secured credit card with your bank. You give them $500 in collateral and they give you a real credit card with a $500 limit. Make sure that you get it in writing that this secured card reports all payments to the three credit bureaus. Use the card once a month for $20 and pay off the bill immediately when it comes in the mail. Do this for about a year or two to establish a decent payment history with the credit bureaus and then ask the bank to grant you a unsecured credit card. Once you get the unsecured card you can close your secured card account and the bank will give you back your $500 with interest. And this is how you start your "credit score" on the right track. Keep an eye on your credit report once you get the secured card. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com after about 6 months and pull one free report from Experian. Wait another 3 months and pull your free report from Transunion... this will give you an idea on how your credit report is doing. It should show that you are making regular monthly payments on your secured card. Go to FICO.com after about 9 months of making regular payments and buy your FICO score. It should be way above the measly 599 you have right now.

You are unlikely to get approved for that loan at this point, but believe it or not, your score could be a lot worse! FICO scores go as low as 300. If you want to rebuild your credit, I recommend applying for a secured credit card. You may be able to get one from your regular bank; if not, you can apply for an Orchard Bank card online. You also might want to consider credit repair. It CAN be done legally, contrary to popular belief.

They tell us to get accounts and be sure to pay them off on time to improve out scores but where? Department stores I guess. I don't know.
