Question
ADHD- CIGNA health insurance?
I'm a 20 year old college student under my parents' CIGNA health insurance. I believe that I have ADHD, I have HORRIBLE memory, I have the worst time concentrating, and always procrastinate. I've been getting good grades, but my procrastination has gotten a LOT worse over the past year. I called my insurance and they said that I'll only have to pay 20% of the "contract rate" for psychologists. So I thought it wouldn't be that much because I'm only interested in an ADHD test, I have absolutely no mental/behavior health problem of any sorts. the first psychologist I called said that the ADHD test alone was going to range from 800-1600 dollars. but I'd have to go in for an initial consultation first which would be 400 dollars. (that is RIDICULOUS) I called the local state university and they said they can do it for a flat fee of 300 dollars, but insurance wouldn't cover any of it. My university is 8 hours away, I wouldn't be able to go to school and get the test done. Is there any way I could get this ADHD test performed for cheaper? and have insurance cover it? PLEASE HELP! thank you! Actually I think I have ADD not ADHD.

The test and consultation would be at most $2000. 20% of that would be $400. But the price the psychologist quotes most likely would not be the contract rate which, depending on what part of the country and the doctor, could be anywhere from 30% to 90% of the $2000. What you'll need to do is get the AMA codes for the procedures from the psychologist and then call Cigna to see if they can give you an idea of the contracted rate for those codes with that doctor.

20% of $800 is $160 and 20% of the $400 is only $80. $80 and $160 is cheaper than the $300 from school. So, make sure you call CIGNA to do it right and make sure you're using one of their providers because the test will be done at the rate negotiated by CIGNA. And then you'd pay 20% of that. Also check to see if you have a deductible that needs to be met first.

Call the number on the back of your card, see if that rate applies to diagnostic testing as well.
