three credit bureaus
Question
How can I get a paid debt off my credit report?
I am in the process of buying a house and previously I had two debts on my credit report - that was it. So I basically had no credit. I paid one the other day and I called to pay the other and they said I paid it in 2005, but for some reason it's still on there. I tried calling Transunion but just got to speak with an obviously Indian man who I could barely understand and he didn't understand my question and I'd rather not have to go that route. Can I just mail all three credit agencies the proof of payment and some kind of letter? Who do I address it to? I want to make sure it gets into the right hands. Is there one central credit bureau I can mail the letter to and be done with it? Any info would be so helpful. I'm closing in less than a month and everything else is fine. Just this one silly issue is holding everything up.

All you need to do is challenge the debt. If you have your credit report and internet access, each bureau has an online challenge procedure. You need to challenge the debt in question, either for validity or for amount. The bureau has 30 days to investigate and update the debt so it is showing as paid and correct the history, or remove the item completely from your report. By the way, you should go ahead and challenge everything that is reporting as negative. It may just get removed from your report.

You don't mention what your credit report actually says - does the report still show a balance? Does it show no balance, but paid late? What exactly are you trying to have removed? If you were late paying the account, the best you can hope for is for the account to show a zero balance - it will still be reported as paid late and that will not be removed.

Go to www.myfico.com and sign up for a free trial (remember to cancel before they start charging you). You can see all 3 of your credit reports and dispute items on all of them online. For Transunion, I think you need to send a letter, but they guide you thru the process.
